The Virtual School aims to support schools, foster carers and social workers to improve outcomes for children in care and previously looked after children.
The Virtual School is a team of teacher consultants whose role is to support children and young people in care. The team has consultants in each phase of education from preschool to post 16. In addition to the core team of teachers, the Virtual School also has direct access to the educational psychology service.
All children in care have a personal education planning meeting (PEP) every 6 months. This meeting, between the young person and the key people in their lives, ensures that everyone is pulling in the same direction. Virtual School consultants chair these meetings on behalf of social workers, offering advice and strategies to support learning. PEPs are written up as a formal record of the meeting with clear targets and actions. This is forwarded to the young person’s social worker for checking and distribution.
