The aim of the School Improvement Service is to provide schools with a high quality service to support their continued improvement
An Access Statement can be needed for a variety of reasons such as a Planning Application, grant application, Building Regulations application or to assess how your building measures up against the requirements of the Equality Act.
Whether your building is new or existing, it can be helpful to take advice, based on knowledge and experience of what must be achieved, but also practical construction knowledge, to ensure that the measures taken are realistic.
For instance, one area that can be overlooked is the management of the evacuation of disabled people in the case of fire. It is a duty of the ‘Responsible Person’ to ensure that all occupants can leave the building without reliance on the Fire Service. This can be a complex problem to ensure the building and its evacuation procedures are adequate.
Under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (‘SSFA 1998’), schools refusing admissionto pupils are required to have in place an independent appeals mechanism, operated in line with the School Admission Appeal Code (‘the Code’). West Berkshire Council is able to offer a School Admission Appeals service for independent schools, operated in line with the Code. It defines the objectives of the service, articulates the cost per appeal and provides a description of the activities associated with its provision. It is provided by and is managed by the Policy and Communication Service of West Berkshire Council
